SpletRocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz) is an intelligent, outgoing and humorous teenager who suffers from a facial deformity called "lionitis" and has now outlived his life expectancy. SpletA tearful movie with Cher at the lead. Except for Moonstruck, this is her best role. Sam Eliot also stars as well as Eric Stoltz in one of his first main roles. Eric plays Rocky, a facially deformed child who with his mother's unending love deals with his problem until his eventual death. A great tear-jerker without becoming too sappy.

Peter Bogdanovich directed the 1985 film Mask, from Anna Hamilton Phelan's screenplay based on Dennis' life. Eric Stoltz portrayed Dennis. In one scene in the film, Stoltz's Dennis reads a poem to his mother, Rusty (played by Cher), that was written by Dennis. The movie is based loosely on Dennis' life, with most of the scenes and dialogue altered for dramatic purposes.
