Sanding a trench to the depth of the thickness of one layer of glass or dynel will make little difference to the strength of the ply or other timber but make a big difference to the effort required for fairing. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with a Dynel sheathing. I would have used Xynole, but Dynel is popular in some places and is more available, as well.
